Education Ministries

Christian education is for everyone! The Lutheran tradition puts a high value on Christian education for all who believe. At St. Peter, some of our particular strengths as a congregation are our Sunday School and Milestone Ministries.

The Board of Christian Education regularly meets at 6:30 on the last Tuesday of the month. Their responsibiilities include facilitating educational programs, coordinating and equipping volunteers, and planning Sunday School and VBS. If you have questions about any of our church's education ministries, feel free to contact our Education Coordinator, Miriam Bjornstad at or (563)-663-6558.

Keep reading for specific descriptions of some of our education ministry programs.

Sunday School

9:20-10:15 Sunday mornings from September - May

Spark LogoThe goal of our Sunday School program is to offer meaningful, engaging instruction in the Christian faith. This year, we're excited to start using the new SPARK curriculum. The new SPARK curriculum has a strong focus on the Bible, helping children to become more familiar with God's Word.

All children from age 3 through middle school are invited to join us for classes and for our Rally Day Carnival on September 7! Regular classes start on September 14.

Sunday School is not just for children! Each Sunday during the school year, adults and high schoolers are invited to the fellowship area for Table Talk teaching and discussions.

One of our newest education ministries is a play group for the youngest in our congregation. If you have a child who is not quite old enough for regular classes, come join our Splash Play Group for children age 3 or younger. This group is for both parents and children. Talk to Amy Welter for more information about play group.

Milestone Ministry

Milestone Ministry is an intentional partnership in ministry between a child's parents and sponsors, and the congregation, throughout the child/young person's growing years.

We respond to the gracious promises of God in Holy Baptism by guiding our children and young persons to growth in faith, marking that growth by publicly celebrating Faith Milestones with them. . . .

  • Holy Baptism
  • Entrance into Sunday School (usually age three)
  • Prayer (winter, first grade)
  • First Bible (fall, third grade)
  • We Believe: The Apostle's Creed (fall, fourth grade)
  • First Communion (during Lent, third grade)
  • Serving the Lord (spring, fifth grade)
  • Entry into Confirmation Ministry (spring, sixth grade)
  • Affirmation of Baptism (Reformation Sunday, usually ninth grade)
  • High School Graduation (spring, twelfth grade)

For more detailed information about our Milestone Ministry, please contact Miriam Bjornstad (Education Coordinator) at

Confirmation is for all students in 6th through 8th grade.
